How did you get started in this work?
I’ve always had the knack for seeing a bigger picture, being able to connect the dots, and envisioning possibilities with my brainstorming — I’ve never had a shortage of ideas <g>. And, I was born with a desire to help others. I thought that I could do all of these things with a career in higher education administration.
So, after I completed my bachelor’s degree in Communication Disorders (mistake #1), I completely jumped ship and got my master’s degree in Student Personnel Services (higher education administration) because I’d learned so much and grown as a person through my involvement with student activities as an undergrad and wanted to help others do the same.
What I discovered in this career was total, extreme burnout from trying to be all things to all people — an open door for students, a resource for colleagues, a clone doing the jobs of 3 people with no ability to have an outside life for my boss, and a political animal playing a ever-sickening game of politics for the college administration. After seven years in the field, I quit with no job prospects and absolutely no idea of what I wanted to be when I grew up. It took me several months to begin to regain my footing, as my job had really beaten me to a pulp the last six months I was there.
This experience started my on my entrepreneurial journey. I took the advice of the pros and tried to create a business from my hobby, stenciling. I became a craft artisan selling hand-stenciled floorcloths and home decorative items through upscale craft shows in New England. In about 9 months I realized how much I hated this work. It had been fun as a hobby but I did not enjoy it at all as a business. What I later came to realize is that I had not yet found a calling that fully let me use my natural gifts and talents.
So, my first business was a miserable failure, although now I look back and see the valuable lessons I learned. Needing to generate an income, I joined the ranks of the job seekers and finally took a position as executive director of a youth organization at half my former salary to appease my then-husband, who refused to consider moving out of the area. Four years later I was very dissatisfied with my job, but benefited greatly from the experience, as in many ways it was like being my own boss with a very small paycheck. I soon quit that job, as well, again with no job prospects in sight.
During this time I had stumbled across the personal coaching field in my endless quest for self-help, self-growth, and self-employment materials. Intrigued, I started signing up for teleclasses galore and began to check out coaching training programs and looking at coaching as a new career option. In the process, I discovered another new and emerging field of virtual assistance. I knew that I wanted to return to Texas to be closer to my family, whom I’d been away from for about 15 years at that point, and my husband tentatively agreed to the move. The prospect of moving meant I needed some way to make a living, and I thought it would be difficult to start a business as a coach, but I thought a business as a virtual assistant would be an easier one to market.
I enrolled in a VA training program in early 1998 and successfully completed it about 8 months later. In the meantime, as I was growing and changing and developing into the person I was meant to be, my marriage was dying. I discovered that my husband was really not too keen on moving, and I wasn’t too keen on staying married to him. My self-growth work had made it apparent that he was never going to be the person I wanted him to be, and if I stayed married to him, I would never be able to break free and become the me I wanted to be.
So, I asked him for a divorce, sold most of my belongings, put the house on the market, packed the remainder of my possessions and my dog in my car, and moved halfway across the country back to Texas to move into my childhood bedroom and opened my virtual assistant business in my mother’s garage. I had no contacts and no prospective customers, BUT I had determination. Note–I’d NEVER recommend anyone else take these same steps to start your own business..:)
After I successfully launched this business from my small, rural, East Texas hometown using only connections I’d made online and Internet marketing strategies, I began to focus solely on helping clients with their Internet marketing and slowly shifted this side of my business to online business management rather than virtual assistance. At the same time, I began to explore starting a coaching side of my business. After a few false starts, I finally discovered how to combine my love of Internet marketing and the experience I’d gained from implementing these strategies for both clients and myself into an online business coaching company, which was born in 2005.
My work as a coach is about helping baby boomers create prosperous online retirement businesses that fulfill their passions. I accomplish this by teaching them how to automate their businesses, leverage their expertise online, and implement a clear, systematic approach to increase their visibility in their marketplace. My coaching consists of a series of steps that anyone (including YOU!) can take in order to create a viable business that is in alignment with your lifestyle, your values, your beliefs and your passions, taking your life far beyond what you’ve ever dreamed possible.
I recently looked back at some journal entries I made in 1997 about what my ideal life would look like someday. Someday has arrived, because I’m now I’m living it!
I work with small business owners and baby boomers just like you who no longer want to work the 90-hour grind in a traditional business. You’ve realized that life is too short to waste it all on work, and while you need to support yourself, you also want to have time to pursue your hobbies, develop relationships, and just enjoy yourself. You want to create your own opportunities, free of the mind-numbing politics and games involved in working for someone else. You want to have complete and total freedom over your income, the people with whom you work, and the amount of time you devote to work. Some of you may be just starting your business as a career transition or as a retirement business, while others may have been struggling for many months or years to find success in their business.
In all cases, the people I work with have one thing in common. They want to pursue their passion and create an online business that they enjoy and in which they revel, so that running their business really feels like play, because when you enjoy what you do, you never work another day in your life…:) They are seeking to profit from what they’re passionate about.
It is a very exciting process to be part of. I get to be a catalyst for huge mindset shifts and total transformations in my clients’ businesses and lives.
How are you different from other “internet marketing coaches”?
It’s probably a misnomer to call what I do coaching. What I do is more likely accurately described as mentoring. I’m told I am too opinionated to be a true coach <g>. I serve as an advisor, resource, mentor, strategist, and cheerleader, all rolled up in one. My coaching skills come into play when I see that the biggest obstacle to your success is you and work with you to help you get out of your own way.
I ONLY work with highly motivated individuals. I keep my 1:1 coaching client list extremely small for a reason. If we work together, it’s because I’m truly interested in what you’re trying to achieve; I can focus on blasting through anything that is holding you back from your big dream; and I’m dedicated to your success.
Who is the program best for and what is expected of me?
This online business coaching program was designed for people who are absolutely committed, inspired and willing to blast through their fears, overcome their doubts, and make an investment in themselves for their success.
You must willing to roll up your sleeves and get to work in honing all aspects of your business. Technology shouldn’t scare you, as I’ll have you take advantage of much of it in our work together. Or, if you’re technology-challenged, you need to have someone on your team (like a Virtual Assistant or an Online Business Manager) who can provide the implementation. The kinds of strategies you may be asked to implement include:
- website and blog changes/updates
- adding a subscription box or contact form
- keyword and target market research
- adding products via a shopping cart
- creating autoresponders
- creating written or audio infoproducts
Please know that I am extraordinarily selective in who I work with. I choose not to work with those who are not a good fit and who aren’t ready to get the results. It would be a waste of their time and money.
My 1:1 coaching is not for those who are struggling financially and are desperate to make money in order to support themselves or have to be successful next week. I have found that people in financial crisis are not able to trust their own internal guidance system well enough to take the risks required and have the presence of mind to do the work to get them to the next level.
If you happen to be experiencing some financial struggles, please know that we’ve all been there. This is what I would suggest:
1. Get some money coming in regularly with a full or part-time job. This will allow you to breathe easier and give you some peace of mind and take you out of desperation mode. Then contact me when you are ready to get serious about your online business.
2. Sign up for my free Ezine. (Click here to subscribe.) The free content and resources I provide each week will get you started, and when you are ready to work with me 1:1, get in contact with me.
I also refuse to work with those who consistently make excuses for not getting their assignments completed on time or have some type of emergency come up every week. Telling me that your business is different from everyone else’s (and you know that I hear this all the time) and that you can’t possibly implement the kinds of strategies I recommend is simply a very convenient excuse to take no action.
If your life consists of one problem or disaster after another, I am not a good fit for you.
What exactly is your 1:1 coaching program and what does it include?
I work individually with clients who want to start an online business and learn the quickest, most effective way to get visibility online.
Here are the 8 steps to getting more visibility online:
- Build your business automation toolkit
- Discover your niche, your ideal client, and your target market
- Assess your competition
- Brand your business
- Design your marketing funnel and your multiple profit centers
- Create your like, know, and trust strategy
- Implement 3 traffic generation methods
- Build your team
We’ll work through these steps in accordance with what you already have in place as outlined in your Online Business Assessment, which you are required to complete prior to our first meeting together.
What do I get for my investment?
I’ll be frank — you get absolutely nothing if you don’t do the work. If you’re not ready to roll up your sleeves and get down and dirty, please don’t waste your time (or mine) trying to fix what ails your business with online business coaching.
However, if you want an experienced business owner by your side mentoring you every step of the way, giving you sound info about which resources to use, what plan to follow, which strategy is most effective, and what potholes and pitfalls to avoid, this is what you get for your investment.
The primary benefit of what you’re getting with your investment with 1:1 private coaching is learning in 3 months what it’s taken me over 10 years to discover through the school of hard knocks. I only wish I’d had someone like me to give it to me straight about creating an online business in the beginning. It would have saved me lots of money, tons of time, and much heartache.
Will I guarantee your results? No, I’d be foolish to do that. Your results depend on how much work you choose to do and how well you do your homework.
I also won’t lie to you. I wish I could promise you that it was easy and would happen instantly with just a little bit of effort. Like any business, this isn’t easy, nor does it happen overnight. If it were, everyone would be doing it..:)
However, if you dig in, do the work, and get over your own self-doubts and out of your own way, you can create an amazing business that runs just like you want it to run, and you’ll experience results like:
- Development of a step-by-step process to plan and implement your online visibility plan
- Definition of your online target market and how you can reach that market
- Creation of a free lead generation tool for your web site
- Map of your services and product marketing funnel that identifies the gaps in your offerings
- Development of a strategy to re-purpose your content
- Location and recommendation of the best online tools and resources to help you automate your business (these are the ones I use daily in my business!)
- Creation of at least one information product that solves the pressing problems of your target market
- Development of a traffic-building strategy that helps you grow your list
- Creation of at least one “stay in touch” device (email newsletter, autoresponder, blog, podcast, video) that help you build a trusting relationship with your contact database.
As a part of our agreement, you’ll also get general reviews of marketing materials like website, blogs, info products, lead generation tools, etc.
How quickly can I expect results?
As soon as our first session. It really depends upon your willingness step forward and do the work required to build a strong foundation for your business.
Yes! I’ll let my clients speak for themselves below with their Rave Reviews.
How will we work together, and what does the coaching entail?
If you are accepted as one of my clients, you and I will meet 3 times a month for 40 minutes each. You will receive additional support from me via email through a private email message board set up just for you, as well as short 5-10 minute personal calls between sessions for support or brainstorming as you need it. Because I’ve written articles and tutorials about many of the processes we will discuss, you also get a complimentary one-year membership to my subscription membership website, OnlineBizU.com. So, instead of taking up our valuable 1:1 coaching time explaining how to set up an autoresponder, for example, I’ll refer you to the detailed tutorial at OnlineBizU.
I ask that you complete a Weekly Workout Log to let me know what you’ve accomplished each week, as well as to tell me about your stumbling blocks and on what topic(s) you want to focus for our next 1:1 coaching session. At the end of each call, I’ll ask you to commit to certain homework assignments that are designed during the call, tailored specifically and uniquely to your situation.
I have found that having my continuous and focused support will keep you accountable and assist you in reaching your growth phase faster than you ever would on your own.
How long would I stay in 1:1 coaching?
To get started, I require a minimum commitment of three months. I feel it takes that long for us to build a trust, focus and momentum and really get into the flow of our coaching relationship. Many clients end up staying on average 6 months to a year depending on the size of the gap between where they are now in their online visibility and where they want to be.
What is my investment in 1:1 coaching?
It’s $1200 for 3 months of online business coaching if paid up front. However, if you are unable to make this payment up front, you can pay for this month-to-month at the first of each month through my recurring billing program at the cost of $450/month for a minimum of 3 months.
Yes, that is the only type of payment I accept for 1:1 coaching.
I’m ready to go. How do we get started?
Simply complete the Coaching Application form found here, and we’ll set up an interview to see if you’re a good match for my 1:1 coaching and I’ll answer any questions you may have at that time.
