Growing up, my family didn’t have much money. My dad, who worked as a shop foreman
for a creosote company, had dropped out of school in the 8th grade to earn money for his family. While we never lacked food (we grew much of what we ate), clothing (my mom made most of my clothes), and shelter (my dad paid cash for our home), we never had money for extras like vacations or trips or health insurance.
